611 hauled multiple mainline excursion trains until 1994 when Norfolk Southern terminated their steam program due to rising insurance costs and increasing maintenance costs.
In 1982, 611 was overhauled and was restored to working order by Robert Claytor. After it's retirement from the N&W, 611 was preserved and was donated to the Roanoke Transportation Museum in Virginia where it was inoperable. Fortunately, 611 was repaired and put back into service and ran regular passenger trains until it was retired in 1959 after pulling the Norfolk and Westerns final "Farewell to Steam" Excursion. Tragically, on January 23, 1956, 611 derailed and flipped off the tracks along the Tugs River in West Virginia while hauling the Pocahontas at an excessive speed. 611, along with the other J Class Locomotives, were built to run fast mainline passenger trains such as the Powhatan Arrow, Pocahontas, and the Cavalier. 611 is a 4-8-4 J Class steam locomotive built in May 1950 by the Norfolk and Western Railway's own Roanoke Shops in Roanoke, Virginia. For about 12 weeks, 611 will be hauling weekend excursions on the Strasburg Rail Road before it will leave in October. 1206, which hauled 611 and its other cars from Spencer, North Carolina to Leaman Place Junction in Paradise, PA.
